The Texas Association of Campground Owners offers suggestions on great places to camp across the Lone Star State and beyond
Many Texans celebrated America’s independence in the Great Outdoors, kicking off a summer of camping opportunities across the Lone Star State.
“The good news for Texans, of course, is that they have the whole summer to enjoy easy access to outdoor recreational opportunities in lakes and rivers, whether they want to go boating or fishing or swimming or simply float down a river in an inner tube,” said Brian Schaeffer, executive director and CEO of the Texas Association of Campground Owners.
“Of course, camping enthusiasts wanting to enjoy great food, beer and wine can also head down to Fredericksburg in the Texas Hill Country, which also has its share of microbreweries and distilleries in addition to its famous wineries,” Schaeffer said.
Here’s a sampling a campgrounds and RV parks across Texas and into south-central Oklahoma that can serve as base camps for summer adventures for Texas residents:
— By the Lake RV Park in Ardmore, Oklahoma: Located between Dallas and Oklahoma City, this family owned park is just 1.5 miles east of Lake Murray. Onsite amenities include include a children’s playground, a pet play area, nature trails, a swimming pool, and a scenic fishing pond.
— Fredericksburg RV Park in Fredericksburg: This park features all pull-through sites; a clubhouse with modern kitchen facilities, a big screen TV and rec room; a gym and fitness center; a koi pond with water features and ducks; horseshoe pits; and free cable and WiFi.
— Lakeshore RV Resort in Garland: Situated on the shores of Lake Ray Hubbard, this park features 184 sites, including 70 pull-through campsites. Park amenities include an activity building with a computer and workout rooms and a barbecue area. The park also has a beach access-style swimming pool and hot tub.
— Pecan Park Riverside RV Park in San Marcos: Located on a scenic bluff overlooking the San Marcos River, this park is a popular location for river tubing enthusiasts. The campground, which has access to nature trails, has 116 spacious RV sites, many of which are shaded by mature pecan trees. Premium sites feature gas barbecue grills. Amenities include an indoor swimming pool and hot tub, Jacuzzi tubs and two off leash dog parks, a children’s playground, and children’s library area.
— San Jacinto Riverfront RV Resort in Highlands: This park features over 300 concrete RV sites with full hookups, including several river-view RV sites with private spas. The park also has luxury rental accommodations, a riverfront clubhouse, parking for boats and trailers, and climate-controlled storage facilities.
— Summer Breeze USA Resort in Katy: This resort features a 50,000+ gallon swimming pool and a tropical village themed water park with slides, sprays, and dumping bucket. The park’s covered palapa area provides over 3,500 square feet of shade for guests who hang out at the pool and waterpark, plus 10,000+ square feet of uncovered decking for sunbathing. The park also has a Texas-size covered hot tub, a bark park and a country store with RV supplies and snacks, including Blue Bell ice cream.
— The Vineyards Campground and Cabins in Grapevine: This campground occupies 52 acres of an 850-acre mostly wooded scenic area encircling Grapevine Lake. The park offers RV sites with concrete pads as well as furnished cabins. Amenities include cable television and upgraded Wi-Fi service and a pavilion as well as kayak and bicycle rentals.
— The Vineyards of Fredericksburg RV Park in Fredericksburg: This park complements its big rig friendly RV sites with glamping wagons with fire pits at every campsite. Amenities include a swimming pool and Jacuzzi, a gym, disc golf, an off-leash dog park, volleyball, bocce ball and a playground with a tire swing and rock climbing wall. The park also has an outdoor pavilion with charcoal and gas grills and a fire pit for gatherings. Valet trash pickup is available every day.
— Whitesboro RV Resort in Whitesboro: This park complements its RV sites with a private pond, a clubhouse with flat screen TVs, a playground and a boat and RV storage facility.
— Woodland Lakes RV Park in Conroe: This park can accommodate RVs up to 45 feet in length. Park amenities include an exercise room and several ponds that are home to black bellied whistle ducks, turtles, fish and other types of birds.
