| We are about to get a 25' trailer with a black water tank. Would like to know if we leave it open all the time, or close and dump only when full.....
Thank you!

Location: yellowstone | Congrats on your new Rv . Leave the black tank closed and the day before your gonna flush it, close the grey tank to let water build up to flush the hose. Keep grey closed when you open black to prevent back flow, when empty close black and open grey to flush the sewer hose. | |

| Definately need to keep it closed, and start with a gallon or so in the bottom of the tank ! If not, you will have a dried out pyramid that is stinky and near impossible to clean out. Many people also make sure to not place any toilet paper down the tank, as it helps to clog the sensors and fill the tank faster.
See you on the road! | |

| You've heard about keeping the valve closed. but what about chemicals? We have a one hundred gal black tank so it takes a while B4 it is 3/4 full. With that said, I have found that borax and cheap powdered water softener work well in the tank to keep things from sticking. we get one box each and mix it then put the mix in a one gal empty water bottle with a large neck and screw cap, we put in two cups of this mix in the empty tank an add about three gallons of water usually from the gray tank. we never had any trouble with stuff sticking. it also helps the smell in the gray tank. The two boxes costs about 8 dollars for both. a lot less than any RV store or Wally world, Tar-jay, C-W, etc charges for the RV chemical stuff and it smells better. IMOP
Note, the two boxes will fill the one gallon bottle twice. if you have a forty gal tank use 1 cup of the mixed powder should be enough. They are found in the laundry isle get the cheap water softener it works just like the name brand.
